1 tablespoon olive oil
1 lb ground beef
1/2 medium yellow onion, finely minced
1/4 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced
3/4 cup tomato sauce
1/4 cup unsweetened ketchup
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
3/4 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
4 hamburger buns or baked sweet potatoes for serving
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the ground beef and cook for about 5 minutes, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon until browned.
Drain most of the excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
Add the onion, bell pepper, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add tomato sauce, ketchup, water, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, chili powder, and hot sauce if using.
Stir well to combine all ingredients.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Cover and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Serve warm on toasted buns or spoon over baked sweet potatoes.
